A new combination of oxide and semiconductors could create new electronics

0

Insulating oxides are non-conductive oxygen-containing compounds, but they can sometimes create conductive interfaces when they are correctly layered together. Conductive electrons at the interface form a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with exotic quantum properties that make the system useful in electronic and light quantum applications.

Researchers at Yale University have developed a 2DEG system on gallium arsenide, an efficient semiconductor that absorbs and emits light.

This development promises new electronics that interact with light, such as new transistors, superconductor switches, and gas sensors.

Lior Kornblum, now at the Technion Institute of Technology, Israel, who describes the new research that appears in the Journal of Applied Physics, says, “I consider this to be the premise for oxide-electronics devices.”

The researchers were surprised to find that in the 2DEG system, a combination of two insulating oxide layers can produce conductive electrons that behave like a gas or liquid between layers of oxide and can transmit information.

Researchers have previously observed 2DEG with semiconductors, but 2DEG oxide has a much higher electron density, making them more potential for some electronic applications.

2DEG oxide has attractive quantum properties. For example, this system appears to exhibit an easy combination with magnetic materials and high superconductivity.

In general, it isn’t very easy to produce 2DEG oxide in large quantities because only the necessary pieces of oxide crystals can be produced. However, if researchers can develop oxides on sheets of commercial semiconductor materials, they can expand 2DEG oxide for real-world applications.

Developing 2DEG oxide on semiconductors also allows researchers to integrate material structures with conventional electronics better. According to Kornblum, oxide electronic circuits interacting with electrons in semiconductors could create new functions and be widely applied in a wider range of devices.

Best Time To Share On Google Plus

While content is the most important factor on people selecting to leave a comment or re-share your posts, the time of the day you post also plays an important role. The factors to consider when posting are:

– Time of the day when your target interest group is most active – The post “Time to live”. How the amount of comments and re-shares is distributed across the post life – Day of the week. People are more active over the weekends on social sites. – How many posts you make per day.

There is an interesting info-graph on the science of social timing here.

While this information applies to Twitter and Facebook, the main trends do apply to Google+. They tell us that: – Wednesday and the weekend are the most active time periods for social media – The time to live from a post peaks right after the post goes live and drops down quickly afterwards. – Spamming and not posting are equally wrong strategies. In Facebook your followers will give you more likes if you post something every 2 days. Masters of the social media like Guy Kawasaki and Robert Scoble post multiple times a day, thus it does not feel as if they were spamming your stream.

Now that we know some of the basic parameters, we can turn to the question on how to get the best time of the day for your interest group. The transparency report tool from Google gives you an overview of internet traffic on your country. For example, for Switzerland:

Note that you can search for different countries and across many Google domains. Unfortunately they don’t yet have stats for plus.google.com yet. Using the traffic for all Google sites should suffice for our purposes. Also note that different countries have different “footprints”. This is the graph for the US:

You can see the difference in surfing activities among citizens of these 2 countries. In Switzerland it peaks in the morning and after lunch. There is a “low traffic zone” in the afternoon and a peak in the evening. In the US this is more normalized: maybe because of the amount of time zones in the country. But it is still clear that the highest traffic is in the evening.

From the Kissmetrics blog we know that social activity is higher in the evening. This makes sense since many people don’t check social media while they are at work. From the country graph for Switzerland we see that the largest evening usage is between 7PM and 9 PM. The best time to get attention from Swiss people is to post at 7 PM (GMT+2)

In the US the best time would be between 6PM and 10 PM Eastern. We have also learned from Kissmetrics that most of the population of the US is in Eastern time (48%). This fact is reflected in the curve start-up time.

There is one remaining point to be discussed: Hangouts. If you want to organize a truly international hangout the best time is 10 AM Eastern time. You get the Europeans around 4 PM, the folks in Asia late at night, and the west coast folks are used to being up early to take the pulse of the world.

Do you have any recommendations on how to increase the visibility of your posts that you want to share with us?

Apple Store refresh to show new Cinema displays, not MacBooks

0

The recent rumors you’ve been hearing, the ones about new MacBook Airs, may not be true. Recent intelligence shows another possibility. You remember those leaked part numbers from Apple, don’t you? At first, we thought those were for some new MacBook Airs that were supposed to be refreshed on July 14. After that never happened, those leaked part numbers made no sense. The new rumor is that those part numbers are for Apple Cinema displays. These displays are to be updated with Thunderbolt support. This way, you can ditch standard display connections and use the new Thunderbolt technology to connect your Mac to a display.

This rumor wasn’t just dreamed up like the past MacBook Air rumor. Apple actually leaked this information theirselves. They posted an image on their website showing a cinema display connected to a MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt. What caught our eye on the image is that the displays show the Lion background instead of the Snow Leopard background that is being used on all other images on the website. Furthermore, the letters in the URL that the image was located at corresponded to the previously mentioned leaked part numbers. To add fuel to the fire, the cinema display portion of Apple’s site would not allow purchases for a while. The “Buy Now” link was broken, but this was later fixed. Whatever the case, a near-future refresh to the cinema displays seems very promising. We might also see Lion released with the new displays, since the leaked images show the Lion background instead of Snow Leopard. Lion is, in fact, due to be released sometime in July, per a promise by Apple.

Primer – Super Robot Transforms like Transformer

6

Developers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have created a micro-robot that can transform and change functions from rolling and reeling, pushing to flying.

That particular robot, called the Primer, is made from stretched plastic polymers. It can change shape as the temperature rises and is controlled by magnets.

Initially, each Primer was an exoskeleton (biological robot) in the form of a plastic sheet. But when combined with a magnetic controller, the exoskeleton can transform into many other polymorphs, such as a drum, a small boat, or even a roller coaster.

The plastic sheets are designed on computers, using the art of origami paper folding to ensure accuracy when starting to transform. Each plate is designed for a specific purpose.

Currently, Primer cannot operate by itself. The researchers still have to remote control so they can move to the required locations.

In the initial test, Primer took up to three minutes to shape the boat moving underwater.

In the future, Primer continues to be improved to improve the speed of movement, the ability to carry, push objects, automate, and can use many shapes at the same time in specific tasks.

The research on Primer has been published in Science Robotics recently.

Browser-based apps to make your life easier

0

I hate it when I have to log in to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn to check on the status of those sites. By the end of it and including email, I might have 8-10 tabs open–on a slow day. Logging into all of these sites is time-consuming and takes an application all its own.

Yonoo is a tool that’s available that can help you consolidate your social media into one browser-based view. Set up was easy. You can establish a free account and then you select the social media that you want to include in your Yoono view. As you select each site, a window opens where you log in to the social media site and that’s it.

You have to install the Yoono plug-in for your Firefox or Chrome browser. I use Safari, FireFox and Chrome constantly so I loaded the plug-in for Firefox and Chrome. There’s also a client version that you can download but lately I’ve been using browser-based applications more and more.

Once you have the plug-in installed and the social media hooked into it, Yoono runs as a sidebar that you can easily minimize as needed. I’ve only just started playing with it but my initial opinion is that this is a pretty handy application. Price: FREE-99.

The next browser-based application that I think is a must-have is HootSuite. HootSuite is a great way to update your social media in one consolidated application. If you have multiple Twitter accounts or blogs or even LinkedIn, you can submit updates using HootSuite There are many cool functions that HootSuite has but one of that I like best is the ability to schedule the posting of my Tweets. I can work on my Tweets for tomorrow right now and I can line up however many tweets I want so I can dominate a Tweet Stream. I always Tweet and retweet through HootSuite. I tweet excerpts from each of my blog posts and sometime retweet others’ tweets. Price: FREE-99.

If you’re a Mac user and even if you’re not, you might want to look into Microsoft’s browser based versions of Word, PowerPoint and Excel. These are stripped down versions of the client apps but they work pretty well, they’re browser based so you don’t have to bastardize your Mac with Windows software, and it’s FREE-99–always the best price. You have to have a Live.com account. I’ve written on this before. You can check it out by clicking here. Price: FREE-99

Another really cool app that I use all of the time is iCyte. ICyte lets you capture webpages and save, categorize and reference whenever you want. This has been great for me because I still like to keep lots of tabs open so that I don’t loose a page that I’m interested in. Now, I can just save the page to iCyte and come back to it whenever I want. What’s key is that it saves the page as it was when you saved it so if the site owner takes the page down, you can still get back to it. ICyte also has a feature where you can go to the live version of the page. Price: FREE-99.

Will Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Be “Ubuntu Tablet Edition?”

0

Apple is keeping iOS, the operating system that powers the iPhone and iPad, to themselves. That leaves other tablet makers out in the cold, unless they buy a company that makes a competing OS (like HP did) or use an existing open-source operating system … like Android, or Ubuntu.
Google says that their Android operating system isn’t designed for tablets yet, although this hasn’t stopped Samsung from selling over a million of their Android-powered “Galaxy Tab” tablets. But what about Ubuntu, the most popular open-source operating system for desktop PCs? Is an “Ubuntu Tablet Edition” in the cards for when Ubuntu Natty Narwhal ships next April? Here’s why I think that they’re heading in that direction.

ARM Processor support in Ubuntu

The reason most desktop PCs have those “Intel Inside” stickers on them is because they use Intel microprocessors in them. (Modern Macs use Intel processors too, but Apple doesn’t like having stickers on their computers.) Intel’s good at making powerful processors like the Core 2 Duo, but so far they’ve failed to make a good tiny processor, of the kind that would power a smartphone or tablet.

Right now, most tablets are powered by ARM processors. So the fact that the people behind Ubuntu are working to make Ubuntu run on ARM processors means that they know which way things are headed. When Mark Shuttleworth says that “increased choice of hardware” is one reason they’re doing this, you know he doesn’t just mean ARM netbooks; he means “better gadgets,” like Ubuntu tablets.

Touch-friendly Unity interface

I reviewed Ubuntu’s Unity interface when it came out for Maverick Meerkat. It’s not just a new skin or design, the way Windows Vista’s “Aero” interface was; it’s a new way of using your computer, that’s not quite like anything else out there. And it can’t be a coincidence that it has large, touch-friendly buttons all along one side of the screen.

Right now Unity has a long way to go. It has poor performance and accessibility support, and most Ubuntu apps aren’t designed for a touchscreen to begin with. But Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is putting a lot of energy into making Unity work in time for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal. So even if Natty’s not going to be Ubuntu Tablet Edition, they’re definitely working on it.

The Upshot

Could Ubuntu really power a tablet like the iPad? As opposed to one like the clumsy, Windows-based tablets, that used a stylus and never caught on. On the surface, it seems doubtful, because Ubuntu wasn’t designed from the ground up to be a tablet OS the way iOS was. It was originally meant to be a desktop PC OS, like Windows.

Ubuntu’s more customizable than Windows, though. And Unity shows that the way you interact with Ubuntu can be changed around completely, and made much more tablet-friendly. Will anyone bite, and make an Ubuntu tablet instead of an Android one? As it turns out, someone already has … and while they’re a “no-name” Chinese company, it still hints at what’s possible.

Click here to take a look! And whatever OS your future tablet will run, I hope you’ll have fun with it.

The SCMP site reported that since July, Mr. Liu Young-way – born in 1956, once head of the semiconductor division – will replace Terry Gou’s position as the chairman of the electronics assembly group, Foxconn.

With this change, many analysts predict that in addition to electronics outsourcing business, Foxconn will expand its investment in many new directions in the future such as AI, robotics or self-operated vehicles.

“Liu has worked at Foxconn for many years. He is a leading expert in Taiwan’s electronics industry,” Gou said in Foxconn’s annual meeting.

Before working at Foxconn as Gou’s special assistant in 2007, Liu founded a chip design company and a printed circuit board factory and ran a subsidiary of United Microelectronics, Taiwan’s second largest chip manufacturer. He also holds a degree in physics from the National University of Transportation and an electrical engineering degree from the University of Southern California.

In 2016, he became a member of Sharp’s board after the Japanese electronics giant was bought by Foxconn. In 2017, Liu was appointed head of the semiconductor department.

According to SCMP, this is a relatively difficult time for Liu because the US-China tension is increasing. In addition to finding more customers in new areas to offset the slowdown in the smartphone industry, Foxconn must also support large customers like Apple, avoiding being affected by trade stress.

Currently, Liu and a group of 9 members will run the company. Gou is still Foxconn’s largest shareholder with a 10% stake and holds an important position in the board. Liu said he will continue to discuss business with Gou once a week.
